Hidden down a quiet cobbled street, yet only a stone's throw from the noise and bustle of London's busiest rail terminus stands Smithy's Wine Bar & Restaurant, known to its regulars as 'The Best Kept Secret in King's Cross.'
In the early years of the last century Smithy's premises were stables for horses of the London General Omnibus Company. Today it has become a popular meeting place for people who enjoy its fine food and drink in surroundings that evoke a London of long ago.
The well worn cobbled floor has been retained, as have the ancient floor to ceiling ramps and gas heaters for the horses. They all add to Smithy's charm and character.
Now refurbished with dark wooden tables, intimate alcoves and some seats cushioned with authentic Victorian tapestry, and with the long bar's subdued lighting, they recreate an atmosphere of eating out in the gaslit days of more than a century ago.
The walls are adorned with old faded photographs of stables and blacksmiths at work, with one wall displaying a unique collection of worn horseshoes.
Located just a short two minutes' walk from King's Cross and St Pancras mainline and underground stations, it is a popular meeting point for many, and an ideal place for city commuters to relax at the end of a long day before heading home.
